German energy company Uniper has secured a judicial victory with a tribunal awarding it over €13 billion (nearly USD 14 billion) in damages due to undelivered gas from Russia’s Gazprom since 2022.

Based in Stockholm, the arbitration tribunal concluded on June 7 that Uniper has the right to terminate long-term gas supply contracts with Gazprom Export, a state-owned entity. Consequently, Uniper is officially ending its contractual relationship with the Russian gas giant.

Post Russia's gas supply cut in 2022, which was a reaction to the nation’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany nationalized Uniper. Before the invasion, Uniper sourced about half its gas from Russia, but faced enormous costs once Gazprom halted deliveries entirely by summer 2022, forcing the company to procure gas at significantly higher market prices to fulfill its obligations.

Michael Lewis, Uniper’s CEO, mentioned that any compensation awarded would ultimately go to the German federal government. However, he expressed skepticism about the actual realization of these financial compensations.

Gazprom had previously claimed technical difficulties reduced the gas flow through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline under the Baltic Sea, a justification German authorities dismissed, viewing the cuts as a politically motivated maneuver post-invasion of Ukraine.
