Essar Energy Transition (EET) announced on Friday that it will set up Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant (CHP) at its Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, UK.

This initiative is a significant segment of EET's USD 3 billion energy transition efforts in the North West of England.

The EET Hydrogen Power project is slated for completion in 2027, bolstering EET Fuels’ ambition to become the lowest carbon process refinery globally and establishing EET Hydrogen as the leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. Additionally, the project will provide low carbon power to other regional industrial users, aiding their decarbonization goals.

The EET Hydrogen Power project will become an independent vertical under EET. Developed in two phases to achieve a capacity of 125 MW, the plant aims to reduce 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

Replacing Stanlow's existing boiler units, which produce around 50MW of power for refinery operations, the new plant is crucial for the decarbonization of EET Fuels’ Stanlow refinery operations, which targets a 95 percent emission reduction by 2030 to become the world’s lowest carbon refinery.

Essar Energy Transition's Managing Partner Tony Fountain commented, ''Launching EET Hydrogen Power reflects the significant progress EET is making towards positioning the UK at the forefront of low carbon energy. This project brings our commitment to life and underscores our aim to lead the global pathway to decarbonising high-emitting industries.”
