Dehradun Police Bust Radioactive Material Smuggling Ring, Arrest Five

Dehradun Police apprehended five individuals on Friday for unlawfully possessing radioactive materials and a radiographic camera. The arrests took place at a residence in Brook and Woods Colony, Rajpur Road, Dehradun. The case is under further investigation, involving the Bhabha Atomic Research Center.

In a significant crackdown, Dehradun Police on Friday arrested five individuals for illegally possessing radioactive material and a radiographic camera. The bust occurred in the Rajpur Road area, specifically in a house located in the Brook and Woods Colony of Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

The arrested suspects hail from various regions including Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh disclosed that the police, during the operation, found radioactive materials and a radiographic camera in the suspects' possession.

During the raid, the suspects warned the police that opening a particular box could be hazardous due to the presence of radioactive chemicals. Further interrogation revealed that the materials were intended for a high-value dealing. Preliminary investigations by intelligence agencies and the SDRF confirmed the presence of radioactive substances. The Bhabha Atomic Research Center has also been consulted. Investigations are ongoing.

The Atomic Energy Act of 1962 regulates the handling and usage of radioactive materials in India. The law mandates strict governmental consent for the manufacture, possession, and transfer of such substances. Radiography cameras employing X-rays or gamma rays are commonly used for industrial inspections.
