U.S. bond futures slipped while the dollar strengthened on Monday as investors believed that a recent attack on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump could enhance his chances of winning, thus creating further political uncertainty in the markets. With Japan on holiday, trading was thin, leading to only a modest rise in the dollar and a slight decline in Treasury futures.

Investors tend to respond to a potential Trump victory by pushing Treasury yields higher due to expectations that his economic policies might drive inflation and increase debt. Proposals to impose tariffs on imports could elevate prices and reduce consumer spending capabilities. Additionally, potential restrictions on migration might tighten the labor market, putting upward pressure on wages.

"The market response to a potential Trump presidency has been characterized by a stronger U.S. dollar and a steepening of the U.S. Treasuries curve. We might see some of these reactions this week if his election odds improve," said Rong Ren Goh, a portfolio manager at Eastspring Investments in Singapore. PredictIT showed a rise in the odds of a Republican win to 66 cents from 60 cents on Friday.
