India Commits Support to Pacific Islands' Sustainable Development

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reaffirmed the nation's commitment to supporting the Pacific Islands in sustainable development. During a virtual ceremony, India signed an MoU for four community projects in the Marshall Islands, emphasizing collaboration in healthcare, infrastructure, and climate resilience.

India considers supporting the Pacific islands' quest for development as its responsibility, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday. He emphasized that the Pacific Islands are more accurately described as 'large Ocean countries' rather than 'small Islands' and highlighted India's privileged role as a partner.

During a virtual event, Jaishankar announced the signing of an MoU for the implementation of four community development projects in the Marshall Islands. These initiatives include a community sports centre in Ailuk Atoll and an airport terminal on Mejit Island, among others, aimed at improving the infrastructure in the region.

Jaishankar referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment at the third FIPIC summit, dubbing such efforts as a reflection of India's recognition of the Pacific Islands' needs. Projects focusing on healthcare, renewable energy, and clean water facilities, among other sectors, underscore the bilateral cooperation and long-standing relations between India and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
