Four individuals were arrested following the brutal killing of a Naam Tamilar Katchi Party worker in Madurai's BB Kulam area on Tuesday. Balamurugan was fatally attacked while walking in the area, Police Commissioner Loganathan confirmed.
The preliminary police investigation revealed the killing was linked to a property dispute between Mahalingam and his nephew-in-law, Pandiyarajan. Balamurugan, supporting Pandiyarajan, reportedly troubled Mahalingam frequently, the police stated in a press release.
In an attempt to resolve the issue, Pandiyarajan had arranged the marriage of his daughter Priya to Mahalingam's son, Alaguvijay. However, due to marital problems, Priya later filed for maintenance and divorce. In March 2024, tensions escalated when Pandiyarajan demanded property for his daughter, leading to Mahalingam's arrest. Priya later informed Alaguvijay about Pandiyarajan's alleged plans to attack Mahalingam with Balamurugan's help. Consequently, Mahalingam, Alaguvijay, and their associates murdered Balamurugan. All the accused have been apprehended, and the murder appears to be the result of ongoing familial and property disputes, the release said.
