As the Union Budget 2024-25 approaches, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh voiced his enthusiasm on Thursday, describing the budget as pivotal for the 'sankalp' of Viksit Bharat. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the budget in Lok Sabha on July 23.
"We are very happy and eagerly awaiting the Union Budget. The University of Delhi has been receiving adequate grants from the Government of India. Last year, we received sufficient funding and this year, we are excited as the budget will set a foundation for Viksit Bharat," Singh told ANI. He emphasized the critical role of higher education in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.
Singh also stressed the necessity of increased investment in education, noting the implementation of the National Education Policy and the expansion of infrastructure at Delhi University. "Education and health remain priority sectors for the government. Achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047 requires active participation from higher education," he added.
Contrastingly, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the BJP-led Center, accusing it of locking India in a cycle of low investment since 2014. Ramesh attributed sluggish growth to erratic policies, cronyism, and the alleged misuse of central agencies. He called for a new liberalized approach to political economy and significant reforms beyond marginal policy changes.
Noteworthy is that Sitharaman, with the upcoming budget speech, will surpass former Prime Minister Morarji Desai's record, making it her sixth Budget presentation as Finance Minister.
