India's Bold Moves Towards Energy Transition and Economic Growth
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced cuts in customs duty on critical minerals and proposed various policies to support India's energy transition. The initiatives aim at boosting renewable energy, nuclear energy, and domestic manufacturing capacities, thus reinforcing economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday unveiled significant measures to catalyze India's energy transition and economic growth. Key among these is a cut in customs duty on critical minerals like lithium, copper and cobalt, essential for sectors including nuclear energy and high-tech electronics.
In her budget speech, Sitharaman emphasized a balanced strategy of economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability. She proposed exempting customs duties on 25 crucial minerals, enhancing their availability for strategic sector applications.
Sitharaman also highlighted various initiatives, including promoting domestic manufacturing for solar cells and panels, supporting pumped storage projects for renewable energy, and developing advanced nuclear technology in partnership with the private sector.
