South African Firefighters Deployed to Canada Amid Alberta Wildfires

As reported by The Guardian, wildfires have forced the evacuation of over 25,000 people from one of Canada’s largest national parks, with both permanent and seasonal residents affected.

The Working on Fire-Kishugu Joint Venture (WOF-Kishugu JV) is dispatching over 200 firefighters and management personnel to assist with the wildfire crisis in Alberta, Canada. The move comes in response to an urgent request from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) due to the severe wildfires threatening the Canadian town of Jasper and its surrounding areas.

As reported by The Guardian, wildfires have forced the evacuation of over 25,000 people from one of Canada's largest national parks, with both permanent and seasonal residents affected. The situation has led to thick smoke and multiple blazes impacting the Rocky Mountain region.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2019 between Canada and South Africa, which facilitates the exchange of wildland fire management resources, the WOF-Kishugu JV is preparing for its sixth deployment to Canada. The partnership, established to bolster international firefighting efforts, has seen previous deployments including a notable mission in 2023 involving 860 firefighters.

The current team, undergoing final preparations at the Kishugu Training Academy in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, will depart on July 26, 2024, via a charter arranged by CIFFC from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. They are scheduled to remain in Canada for 39 days.

Expertise and Diversity: The team comprises pump-trained firefighters with valid yellow cards and over three years of experience. Notably, 30% of the firefighters in this deployment are women, including three management members, reflecting WOF's commitment to diversity and inclusion. Several team members have prior international firefighting experience, enhancing their capability in managing complex fire situations.

Impact on Local Operations: WOF has assured that their domestic operations will continue unaffected. With over 5,000 firefighters stationed across South Africa, the organization remains committed to providing fire prevention and suppression services nationwide. They are prepared to deploy additional resources from the Western and Eastern Cape if necessary.
