The Sudarshan S-400 air defence missile system achieved notable success during a recent exercise, neutralizing 80% of 'enemy' fighter aircraft and forcing others to retreat, defence sources informed ANI. The exercise, carried out by the Indian Air Force, highlighted the system's capability in a theatre where a squadron of the S-400 has been deployed.

The exercise aimed to demonstrate the full integration of the S-400 system into the Indian Air Force. Real fighter aircraft were deployed to test the system, which has been named Sudarshan after Lord Krishna's mythical weapon. The S-400 successfully 'locked on and targeted' the 'enemy' package, showing an 80% success rate in simulated action.

Remaining aircraft aborted their attack missions and were intercepted by the air defence system. The IAF has now fully integrated the S-400 system, with three squadrons inducted and two more expected by 2026. India has requested Russia to expedite the delivery of these systems during a high-level visit.

India and Russia have signed a deal worth over Rs 35,000 crore for five S-400 squadrons. The Indian Air Force, which also received indigenous MR-SAM, Akash systems, and the Israeli Spyder missile systems, believes the S-400 will be transformative. The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the procurement of the Indian Long Range Surface Air Missile System under Project Kusha, following approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security.

The IAF's enhanced air defence capabilities come as the Chinese military has also deployed extensive air defence systems across the Line of Actual Control. India has responded by significantly bolstering its own air defence infrastructure.
