Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda has extended his felicitations to Manu Bhaker for securing a Bronze medal in Women's 10m Air Pistol at the Paris Olympics, heralding it as a proud moment for a daughter of a small Rohtak village in his Lok Sabha constituency.
Expressing elation and pride, Hooda remarked, 'We are all very happy and we extend best wishes to the Olympic contingent. We congratulate Manu Bhaker and her family. We are proud of the players of Haryana as the majority of the players who are part of the Indian contingent are from Haryana.'
Highlighting Haryana's significant contribution, he noted that 21 percent of India's Olympic contingent hails from the state. 'It's commendable that a daughter from a small village in Rohtak has clinched the first medal for the country. For the past four Olympics, players from Haryana have upheld this tradition,' he added.
In recognition of her achievement, Haryana Minister Aseem Goel has announced that the state government will honor Manu Bhaker. The 22-year-old athlete created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal.
Bhaker bagged India's first medal in the ongoing event, scoring 221.7 for a Bronze medal. This victory marked a redemption for Bhaker after her pistol malfunctioned during the Tokyo Olympics. She has now become the first Indian woman in 20 years to reach an Olympic shooting final in an individual event since Suma Shirur in 2004.
Ye Jin of South Korea secured the Gold with an Olympic record of 243.2 points, followed by her compatriot, Kim Yeji, who took Silver with 241.3 points. On the opening day, Bhaker finished third in the qualification round to advance to the final. However, Rhythm Sangwan missed out, finishing 15th.
