Karnataka Minister Launches Major Drainage Project to Prevent Water Pollution

Karnataka Energy Minister KJ George initiated a significant drainage project in Chikkamagaluru, aiming to prevent water pollution and improve sanitation. The 6.50 km drainage line, costing INR 14.5 crores, is expected to complete in 12 months and will enhance wastewater management across the municipality.

Karnataka Energy Minister KJ George on Monday laid the foundation stone for a crucial drainage project in the Yagachi pit, Chikkamagaluru district. The 6.50 km drainage line, executed by Chikkamagaluru Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation, is estimated at INR 14.5 crores.

Minister George emphasized the need for local support to ensure the project’s success. Funded under the National Green Tribunal Environmental Relief Fund, this initiative aims to prevent water pollution by addressing sewage issues in the Yagachi pit area.

Targeted for completion within 12 months, the project promises significant environmental improvements, including effective wastewater management and enhanced sanitation. The Yagachi River, a key tributary of the Hemavati river, will benefit from these efforts.

The project’s scope includes clarifying concerns regarding linking Aadhaar numbers to IP set RR numbers, primarily for better record-keeping. George assured that this measure would aid in efficient electricity distribution and deter illegal pump sets. Free electricity for agricultural pump sets up to 10 HP remains unchanged.

At a recent press conference, George reinforced the state's commitment to providing uninterrupted power, even during drought conditions. The goal is to ensure seven hours of daily electricity without load shedding, facilitated by demand-based allocation and quarterly district-level meetings to resolve issues.
