Oil Prices Plunge to Seven-Week Lows Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
Oil prices fell to seven-week lows as concerns over a softening demand outlook dominated markets. Commodities and stocks traded cautiously ahead of key central bank meetings in the U.S. and Japan. Despite recent gains, markets are preparing for potential rate changes. Key corporate earnings and economic data releases are expected.
Oil prices plummeted to their lowest in seven weeks on Tuesday as a declining demand outlook weighed heavily on commodities. The bond, currency, and stock markets displayed cautious trading ahead of central bank meetings in the U.S. and Japan, coupled with the release of major corporate earnings reports.
Brent crude futures dropped to $79.70, driven by concerns over Chinese demand, overshadowing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Venezuela. Metal prices, including copper and iron ore, also took a hit, with zinc and aluminium reaching multi-month lows. Notably, China's Politburo meeting in July failed to announce new measures to stimulate the economy.
Economist Chris Scicluna of Daiwa Capital noted, "We might have hoped for global economic traction, but it seems things are cooling down." The S&P 500 steadied after a two-week dip, while European markets remained flat. Attention now shifts to upcoming economic data and central bank decisions, with the term 'calm before the storm' aptly capturing market sentiment.
