Indian Army Races Against Time to Build Bailey Bridge Amid Wayanad Landslides

The bridge is crucial for rescue operations, enabling the transport of essential supplies. The death toll stands at 167 as relief efforts intensify.

Amid fierce weather conditions, the Madras Engineer Group (MEG) of the Indian Army is making steady progress on constructing a temporary Bailey Bridge in landslide-affected Chooralmala, Wayanad. Southern Command Pune shared on social media that the MEG team continues its relentless efforts despite obstacles like rising water levels and nighttime work challenges.
Reports indicate that the bridge's completion is critical for transporting rescue vehicles, cutters, food, and water to Mundakkai. Currently, numerous volunteers are working tirelessly among the debris to find survivors.
The landslides, which struck Wayanad on Tuesday morning, claimed 167 lives and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. With rescue operations intensified, political leaders are discussing relief measures, and financial aid is being mobilized. The Army has established a Command and Control Centre in Kozhikode to coordinate these efforts, and naval aviation assets are on standby to assist.
Union Minister George Kurien visited Wayanad to evaluate the ongoing rescue operations and meet with victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
