Crisis in Darfur: Famine Strikes as Aid Blockade Persists

Malnourished children in a famine-hit camp for war-displaced people in Sudan's western region of Darfur face a dire risk of dying, an aid group reported Sunday, citing a forced rationing of malnutrition treatment due to a blockade by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a notorious paramilitary group.

Doctors Without Borders stated that the RSF, currently besieging al-Fasher city amid its ongoing war against the Sudanese military, has hindered three trucks carrying crucial medical supplies, including therapeutic food, to the city and the nearby Zamzam camp, where famine was confirmed last week.

Sudan has been in chaos since April last year when tensions between the military and RSF exploded into open conflict, especially devastating in Darfur. The fighting has led to thousands of deaths and widespread starvation, displacing over 10 million people according to the U.N., with more than 2 million fleeing to neighboring countries.
