Heavy Rainfall Alert in Himachal Pradesh: Orange Warning Issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh due to expected heavy rainfall on August 7 and 8. Residents and travellers are advised to remain cautious as severe weather might lead to flooding and road blockages, particularly in Kangra, Hamirpur, and Chamba districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Himachal Pradesh over the next three days. An orange alert is specifically in place for August 7 and 8, highlighting the potential for severe weather in the region. Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava, Head of IMD HP, noted, "The monsoon season has so far been below average in rainfall. Over the past 24 hours, Hamirpur received 67 mm of rain, with other areas experiencing light to moderate showers. Rainfall is expected at isolated locations over the next 24 hours."

The IMD reports that a northward shift in the monsoon trough will enhance the flow of moisture from the east and southwest, leading to heavy rainfall mainly in Kangra, Hamirpur, and Chamba districts. "As a result, we have issued an orange alert for these regions on August 7 and 8 due to anticipated severe weather," added Dr. Srivastava. "An advisory for rain and potential floods is already in place. Cloud cover is pervasive across the state, causing widespread fog, with light rainfall currently observed in Shimla and nearby areas."

Residents and tourists in Himachal Pradesh should stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines as the weather is expected to disrupt daily activities and pose flooding risks. Two flash floods were reported in the Lahaul and Spiti district, blocking the Manali-Leh National Highway 3 near Zing zingbar. According to local police, the flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, caused significant damage to the road, accumulating debris and rocks. "All traffic is halted at Darcha and Sarchu police check posts until the road is cleared," the Lahaul Spiti Police stated.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been quickly mobilized to tackle the situation, with teams working on-site to clear the debris. "Travellers should avoid the area until the highway is fully reopened," advised the police. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on the progress of the clearance work. (ANI)
