India's Horticulture Sector Gets Boost with Clean Plant Programme

The Union Cabinet, led by PM Narendra Modi, has approved the Clean Plant Programme, investing Rs.1,765.67 crore to enhance India's horticulture sector. This initiative promises virus-free planting materials, improved crop yields, and increased farmer income, aiming to boost India's position in the global fruit market.

The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned the Clean Plant Programme (CPP) proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Involving a substantial investment of Rs.1,765.67 crore, this forward-thinking initiative is set to transform India's horticulture sector, setting new benchmarks in excellence and sustainability.

According to an official release from the Agriculture Ministry, key benefits of the Clean Plant Programme include access to virus-free, high-quality planting material. This will lead to increased crop yields and enhanced income opportunities for farmers. Streamlined certification processes and infrastructure support will enable nurseries to propagate clean planting material efficiently, fostering growth and sustainability.

The initiative will ensure consumers benefit from superior produce free from viruses, enhancing the taste, appearance, and nutritional value of fruits. By producing higher-quality, disease-free fruits, India aims to strengthen its position as a leading global exporter, expanding market opportunities and boosting its share in the international fruit trade.

The Programme will prioritize affordable access to clean plant material for all farmers, regardless of their landholding size or socioeconomic status. It will actively engage women farmers in its planning and implementation, ensuring their access to resources, training, and decision-making opportunities.

By addressing diverse agro-climatic conditions across India and developing region-specific clean plant varieties and technologies, the Clean Plant Programme is set to significantly boost India's horticultural sector. Aligning with the Mission LiFE and One Health initiatives, it promotes sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices while reducing dependence on imported plants. This initiative, implemented by the National Horticulture Board in conjunction with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), represents a crucial step toward establishing India as a leading global fruit exporter and achieving transformative change in the sector.
