Sikkim CM Inaugurates Crucial Teesta River Bridge Restoring Connectivity

Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated a 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge over the Teesta River, constructed by Project Swastik of BRO, to restore road connectivity following catastrophic flash floods. The bridge reconnects South and East Sikkim, signaling significant recovery and development in the Namchi region.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated a 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge over the Teesta River on Monday. The bridge, constructed by Project Swastik of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at Singtham, aims to restore road connectivity after a series of disasters struck the border state.

The Chief Minister emphasized that providing relief and expediting restoration efforts is the government's topmost priority. He praised BRO's role in driving economic and infrastructure development in the state. Senior state dignitaries and Project Swastik officials attended the inauguration.

The previous Indrani Bridge, initially constructed by the Sikkim Public Works Department, was destroyed by catastrophic flash floods on October 4, 2023. The floods severely damaged the road network and multiple bridges, isolating the northern and southern regions of Sikkim.

In response, the Sikkim government swiftly ordered the construction of new suspension Bailey bridges. A joint survey with GRSE led to an MOU for the new bridge. Project Swastik began building the 300-foot bridge in mid-May, with abutments completed by July 30 and the superstructure within 10 days.

The inauguration of the new Indrani Bridge marks a significant milestone in South Sikkim's recovery from the GLOF tragedy. The project not only reconnects South and East Sikkim but also lays the foundation for enhanced economic and social development in the Namchi region. Project Swastik of BRO has once again demonstrated its invaluable contributions to Sikkim's growth and resilience.
