On Wednesday, the Congress officially nominated Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Telangana. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced through an AICC press release that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had approved Singhvi's candidature to contest the impending bye-election to the Council of States from Telangana.
'Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Abhishek Manu Singhvi as Congress candidate to contest the ensuing bye-elections to the Council of States from Telangana,' Venugopal stated. Notably, Singhvi had earlier lost the Rajya Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh this February.
The Election Commission of India recently confirmed the schedule for the bye-election to the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Telangana, specifying that polling will occur on September 3. This by-election was necessitated by the resignation of former BRS MP K Keshava Rao, who rejoined the Congress party after resigning from RS membership on July 4. Rao, a former chief of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, initially moved to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now Bharat Rashtra Samithi) in 2013 and returned to Congress after more than a decade.
