The Indian National Congress has appointed Tariq Hameed Karra as the new President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Vikar Rasool Wani. Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla have been named as the Working Presidents. This significant reshuffle comes just hours after the announcement of the Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Vikar Rasool Wani, the outgoing President, has been appointed as the Special Invitee to the Congress Working Committee. The party has praised his contributions during his tenure. Karra, who was formerly a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee, is now tasked with leading the Congress in the region. The official notice stated: 'Congress President has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Jammu & Kashmir PCC as follows, with immediate effect.'

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the results announced on October 4. The deadline for filing nominations spans from August 27 to September 12. The elections will cover 90 constituencies and engage 87.09 lakh voters, marking the first electoral event in the region in a decade. The previous elections held in 2014 preceded the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government in 2018.
