West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has urgently sought a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister JP Nadda regarding the shocking rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to Rajbhawan sources, this plea underscores the gravity of the incident that has rattled the nation.
Earlier today, the Central Bureau of Investigation team spearheading the investigation undertook psychological profiling of the main accused. A psychologist from the CBI team arrived in Kolkata to assist the investigation, showing the intense efforts being made to solve the case. Concurrently, the CBI conducted a 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of the hospital for a more thorough analysis.
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, setting up a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, to hear it on August 20. The brutal crime has spurred nationwide outrage, resulting in numerous protests from various communities.
Today, football fans staged a significant protest near Salt Lake Stadium, leading to the cancellation of a Durand Cup match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Meanwhile, protests continue unabated at RG Kar Medical College, where junior doctors and students have been ceaselessly demonstrating since the August 9 incident.
Tensions escalated on August 14 when a mob vandalized the protest site and hospital campus at RG Kar, prompting police intervention. In a bid to maintain law and order, Kolkata police have enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, around the hospital for a week, effective from August 18 to August 24.
