YWCA India Joins Protests in Response to Kolkata Medical College Rape-Murder

The Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) of India has joined protests against a recent rape-murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Demonstrations took place at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, with the YWCA releasing a statement condemning gender-based violence and calling for stronger protections for women.
YWCA's National President Kunjamma Mathew addressed the gathering, urging for justice and safety for all women. She emphasized the importance of creating safe environments and encouraged women to continue advocating for their rights, until they can walk without fear or violence.
The Supreme Court has also stepped in, questioning the West Bengal police on delays in filing the First Information Report and other procedural issues. The court, which has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, has established a national task force to address the safety of medical professionals. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed deep concern, stating the need to ensure workplace safety for women.
