Drone Incident Escalates Tensions in Polish Airspace Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Poland reported that a drone, likely from the Russian bombardment of Ukraine, entered its airspace early Monday. The object is being searched for by 100 soldiers and one helicopter. Poland has been on high alert since a stray Ukrainian missile struck its territory in 2022, killing two people.
Amid escalating tensions, Poland announced that a drone had likely penetrated its airspace early Monday morning during a Russian assault on Ukraine. The object in question may have landed on Polish soil, prompting an extensive search operation involving 100 soldiers and a helicopter.
Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for the Polish army's operational command, stated that the characteristics of the object indicated it was a drone, not a missile. However, due to adverse weather conditions, visual identification of whether it originated from Russia or Ukraine was not possible. The object was last tracked by radar at 0516 GMT.
Previously, Poland had scrambled jets due to simultaneous attacks on Ukraine, maintaining high alert since a stray Ukrainian missile incident in 2022. This incident is the most recent in a series of airspace violations, underscoring the ongoing regional volatility.
