The number of injured individuals during the Dahi Handi celebrations on Krishna Janmashtami has surged to 206, according to reports from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and various private hospitals on Wednesday. Initially, the injury count was 15.
The Govindas, participants in the festivities, are reportedly receiving treatment at outpatient departments (OPDs) in various private hospitals. The report states that 157 of the injured have been discharged.
Specific instances include three individuals being discharged from JJ Hospital, while St. George Hospital reported one discharge, and two others are still receiving OPD treatment. Last year, during the same celebrations, 195 Govindas were injured. Out of these, 18 needed hospital admission, while the remaining 177 were discharged.
Dahi Handi, a major cultural activity, involves filling an earthen pot with curd, butter, and other milk products, which is then placed at a height. A human pyramid is formed to reach and break the pot, symbolizing Lord Krishna's playful and innocent nature, as well as his love for milk products. The celebrations reenact Krishna's childhood act of eating curd hung at a height.
Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra, according to the Hindu calendar. This day usually falls in August or September. Janmashtami is celebrated with prayers, decorated swings, dance, and music performances, along with the Dahi Handi competition. (ANI)
