Global Markets Stagnate, Eyes on Nvidia's Earnings
Global equity markets remained mostly steady while the U.S. dollar rebounded ahead of economic data and Nvidia's earnings. European and Japanese stocks saw minor gains. Nvidia, crucial to AI computing, could impact markets with its earnings. U.S. economic indicators and USD movements also garnered attention.
Global equity markets showed limited movement while the U.S. dollar recovered on Wednesday, as investors awaited significant economic data and Nvidia's quarterly earnings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average inched up 0.01% to 41,246.40, the S&P 500 dipped 0.23% to 5,612.94, and the Nasdaq Composite decreased by 0.66% to 17,637.45.
Technology shares boosted Europe's STOXX index, which rose 0.47% to a one-month high, while Japanese stocks ended 0.22% higher. Despite a slight decrease of 0.05%, MSCI's global stocks gauge stayed near its August 23rd record close of 831.34. Nvidia's dominance in AI computing has significantly increased its market value, affecting broader market trends.
The chipmaker's earnings are closely monitored, with potential revenue doubling in Q2, though this might not meet expectations. Options pricing suggests a historic market value swing of almost 10%. Michael Ashley Schulman, CIO at Running Point Capital, believes Nvidia's results are a key market indicator, potentially impacting megacaps and semiconductor stocks, and could be more influential than upcoming Federal Reserve speeches.
Key economic indicators like the U.S. GDP estimate and the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index are due this week. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes slightly dropped to 3.825%. Following recent declines, the dollar advanced; the dollar index rose 0.37% to 100.98, and the euro fell 0.5% to $1.1128. Gold prices dropped, with spot gold down 0.75% and U.S. gold futures 0.6% lower.
Oil prices also fell amid concerns over Chinese demand and potential broader economic slowdowns. Brent crude futures dropped 1.02% to $78.74 per barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 1.14% to $74.66 per barrel.
