In a crucial move following the Kolkata rape and murder case, former Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand has reached out to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, urging the implementation of robust measures to address crimes against women.
Anand's letter recommends the adoption of Sexual Assault Evidence Kits (SAEC) to systematically collect forensic evidence and the appointment of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) to provide immediate medical and psychological support. SANE nurses are specially trained to conduct forensic examinations and offer expert court testimony, which could significantly strengthen the prosecution of rape cases.
Anand also proposed the establishment of Rape Crisis Centres (RCCs) across cities, towns, and villages to offer comprehensive support to victims, including medical, psychological, legal, and financial assistance. These multidisciplinary centers aim to improve the efficiency of handling sexual violence cases and are modeled on successful international policies.
The Supreme Court has acknowledged the urgency of addressing such grave issues. Anand, speaking from her extensive experience in the legal field, emphasized the necessity for evolved legal and institutional frameworks to prevent future tragedies and ensure justice is served effectively.
