Gujarat has reached a remarkable milestone by constructing more than 14 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) over the last nine years. The initiative includes 8.68 lakh urban housing units and 5.57 lakh rural housing units, marking significant progress since the scheme's launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.
A notable aspect of the scheme is the empowerment of women, with over 5.40 lakh houses approved in their name or joint ownership. Furthermore, 60 percent of the beneficiaries belong to Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes. Gujarat also excels in the Credit Linked Subsidy component, benefiting over 6 lakh first-time homebuyers in urban areas.
Resident testimonials like that of Kiranben Rathore from Khadat highlight the life-changing impact of PMAY, providing safe and sanitary housing to many. The scheme's urban arm witnessed another milestone with Gujarat becoming the first state to get approval under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan for converting existing houses into rental units. Subsequent recognitions and awards from both state and central governments underscore Gujarat's leading role in implementing PMAY effectively.
