Assam Chief Minister and Jharkhand co-election in-charge, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has alleged that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's visit to the United States is aimed at defaming India. Sarma's comments were in response to statements made by Gandhi during his US tour.
"Rahul Gandhi's purpose of going to America is to defame India. There is no point in commenting about a person who speaks against India abroad," Sarma remarked to reporters, reacting to Gandhi's controversial statements on religious freedom in India made during his US visit. Gandhi had questioned whether Sikhs could openly practice their faith.
During his visit to the US, which included stops in Dallas and the University of Texas, Gandhi met with students, teachers, and Indian diaspora members. He argued that the main political fight in India is about religious freedoms and criticized the ruling BJP, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's influence had diminished post the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
