On October 24, 2024, Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army are set to host the annual 'Tawang Marathon', a premier event in the northeast Indian state's sporting calendar. According to an official release, the marathon aims to promote sportsmanship and test the endurance of participants against Tawang's challenging terrain and high altitude atmosphere.

The Tawang Marathon, one of India's most demanding mountain runs, invites runners from across the globe to take part in this high-altitude, high-stakes event in the 'Land of the Rising Sun'. Aligning with UN Flag Day, the marathon underscores its theme of 'Run for Global Peace' amidst ongoing global tensions.

Announced by the Arunachal government on July 24 and with registrations now open, the event boasts a prize pool of Rs 60 lakh, triple last year’s amount. Preparations for this grand celebration of competitive spirit are well underway, with all eyes on the registration website that went live on July 10, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu as the first registrant.

The event's organizers have rolled out attractive travel packages and administrative support to welcome marathon participants. 'Tabos, the Mascot', along with the hospitable Monpas community, the Indian Army, and Tawang's administration, are geared up to host the participants with traditional hospitality.

In anticipation of the Second Edition, significant preparatory efforts are in progress, including promotional runs in Delhi, Shillong, and Guwahati, and awareness stalls at Hyderabad and Satara. A YouTube channel for real-time updates will also be launched soon. Both mainstream marathoners and members of the Armed Forces will participate, showcasing a strong civil-military partnership.

The nationwide media campaign aims to attract top-tier participants, promising them a lifetime experience in Tawang's scenic beauty—clear blue skies, dawn-lit mountains, pristine streams, and rich flora and fauna. The grand Tawang Marathon is not just a race, but a celebration of unity and peace.
