Himachal Pradesh Approves Pioneering Pumped Storage Projects for Renewable Energy

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu announced the approval of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) to enhance renewable energy reliability. The two projects, with a combined capacity of 1,900 MW, will utilize low-cost electricity and local geography to stabilize the grid and mitigate power shortages.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu announced Tuesday that the state government had decided to explore technologically advanced Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs). These initiatives are seen as vital for balancing power supply from renewable sources such as solar and wind energy, according to an official statement.

During a recent state cabinet meeting, the allotment of the first two PSPs was approved. The projects include the 1630 MW Renukaji Pump Storage Project in Sirmaur district and the 270 MW Thana Plaun Pump Storage Project in Mandi district's Beas Basin. Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (HPPCL) will manage both projects. Sukhu emphasized that the state's unique geography makes it ideal for such projects, which are crucial for grid stability and mitigating power shortages during high-demand periods by releasing stored water to generate electricity.

The PSP system involves pumping water from a lower to a higher elevation reservoir using low-cost electricity, typically during off-peak hours. When electricity demand increases, the stored water is released back through turbines to generate electricity. Work on both projects is underway, with separate powerhouses for regular power generation and the PSP system. The Renukaji Hydro Power Project will have a capacity of 40 MW, while the Thana Plaun Hydro Electric Project will generate 191 MW, with special turbines for the PSP system.

Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted that the state's Swaran Jayanti Policy, 2021 prioritizes the development of PSPs. Proposals and Pre-Feasibility Reports for both identified and self-identified PSPs will be invited every six months. These steps aim to boost revenue and position Himachal Pradesh as a prosperous state. According to the release, SJVNL has identified four PSPs totaling 2,570 MW, BBMB eight projects at 13,103 MW, NTPC Limited two projects with 2,400 MW, the private sector seven projects of 2,074 MW, and HPPCL two projects with 1,900 MW potential.
