Sterling Soars: Pound Nears Two-and-a-Half-Year Peak
Sterling rose sharply on Thursday, nearing its highest level against the dollar in two and a half years, buoyed by China's new stimulus plan which boosted investor confidence. Support for the pound is also coming from the divergence in monetary policies between the Bank of England and other major central banks.
Sterling surged on Thursday to approach its highest level against the dollar in two and a half years, driven by a newfound boost in risk appetite among investors following China's stimulus plan.
The pound typically strengthens when investors gravitate towards riskier assets such as equities, which saw a significant rise on Thursday. Adding to the pound’s momentum is the differing monetary policies of the Bank of England compared to other major central banks.
UK inflation rates have been higher than many anticipated, leading to expectations of a slower easing cycle from the BoE, in contrast to the Federal Reserve’s recent shift towards supporting the labor market through loosened monetary policies. "We believe higher yield differentials will bolster the pound against the dollar over time," said Patrick Ernst, director of forex investment strategy at UBS.
