Month-Long Activities Mark International Day of Older Persons in India

The government will observe the International Day of Older Persons on Tuesday, kicking off a month-long series of activities aimed at promoting senior citizen welfare. Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, will preside over the celebrations in New Delhi, with Minister of State B.L. Verma as the guest of honour.
Centered on intergenerational bonding, the program will emphasize respect and care for the elderly. The ministry's initiatives include launching a Senior Citizen Welfare Portal and organizing a mega cultural event, 'Celebrating Graceful Ageing: Life Begins at 60,' on October 24. This event will feature performances by artists over 70, highlighting themes of active ageing and traditional Indian care systems.
A pledge-taking ceremony and aid distribution for senior citizens will be held on October 1, attended by Dr. Kumar. Rashtriya Vayoshree Camps will be set up at 51 locations to provide assistive devices. Collaboration with other ministries will further support initiatives focused on elderly welfare, particularly in rural areas. The month-long celebration will end with a grand finale in New Delhi.
