The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued a call to action to the Indian Premier League (IPL), pressuring the popular sports entity to clamp down on tobacco and alcohol advertisements as its new season approaches.

In a letter addressed to IPL Chairperson Arun Singh Dhumal, Atul Goel emphasized the health repercussions of non-communicable diseases, which are fueled by tobacco and alcohol use. Such lifestyle choices lead to ailments accounting for more than 70% of deaths annually in India.

Highlighting the contradictory message conveyed by sports promotions linked to these substances, Goel urged a ban on all forms of such advertising within stadiums and during broadcasts. The DGHS stressed the league's responsibility to support public health initiatives and maintain the integrity of role models presented in the sport.
