Northwest India is set to endure a sweltering summer with nearly double the usual number of heatwave days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Traditionally, the region experiences five to six heatwave days a season, but this year, officials anticipate 10 to 12 days.
"Slightly above normal heatwave conditions are expected, particularly over West and Central India," stated IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy. While this stands as a regional forecast, the IMD will continue to refine predictions with regular updates for more precise local information.
The IMD's Seasonal Heat Outlook for March to May 2025 signals above-normal temperatures for much of the country, though southern and some northeastern parts might see near-normal levels. Meanwhile, northwesterly winds will bring relief by lowering temperatures after a brief uptick, ensuring a dry, dusty atmosphere.
