Frigid Temperatures Grip Kashmir Valley Amid 'Chilla-i-Kalan'
Kashmir is experiencing extreme cold as temperatures remain below freezing. Srinagar recorded a low of -3.9°C. Many water bodies, including parts of Dal Lake, are frozen. The coldest place was Shopian at -6.1°C. 'Chilla-i-Kalan', the harsh winter period, will end on January 30, 2023.

Kashmir is currently experiencing some of its coldest days as temperatures across the valley remain well below freezing. On Thursday, officials reported that Srinagar saw a low of minus 3.9 degrees Celsius overnight, a slight rise from the previous minus 5.2 degrees recorded on Wednesday.
Bone-chilling cold conditions have led to the freezing of several water bodies, including Dal Lake. The coldest spot in the valley was Shopian, which registered minus 6.1 degrees. Other notable figures included Pulwama at minus 6.1 degrees, Pahalgam at minus 5.0 degrees, and Sonamarg with minus 5.8 degrees Celsius.
Kashmir remains in the grip of 'Chilla-i-Kalan', a 40-day period known for its severe winter conditions. This period, starting from December 21 and ending on January 30, is when night temperatures dip significantly, and snowfall is common. The India Meteorological Department forecasts an approaching western disturbance likely to impact the valley from January 16.
