In an ambitious move to uplift the agricultural sector, Uttar Pradesh has unveiled a Kharif strategy aiming for a 12% hike in foodgrain and oilseed output, targeting a surge from 260 lakh tonnes to 293 lakh tonnes, according to an official announcement on Monday.
The state plans to bolster this initiative with advanced crop planning, focusing on maize and paddy production and area expansion, alongside constructing 8,500 farm ponds for water conservation.
Further revitalizing sowing, crop care, and irrigation efforts, Divisional Commissioners and District Magistrates will ensure quality seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation facilities. Specialized training under agricultural officers' guidance will be provided to farmers.
Confronting water scarcity solutions, a farm pond scheme will be carried out under the National Agricultural Development Scheme, which will result in 2,033 farm ponds construction by March 31, 2025. More farm ponds are set to follow, with online registrations promoting transparency and effective benefit access.
These small farm ponds serve as mini reservoirs, capturing rainwater for crop irrigation, livestock watering, and supporting fish farming, proving particularly beneficial in regions with unpredictable rainfall, increasing water availability, and enhancing crop productivity.
