India's gross GST collections have soared to an unprecedented Rs 22.08 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2024-25, government data revealed on Monday. This marks a significant increase from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in FY21, highlighting the tax's robust growth over recent years.
The gross goods and services tax has seen a 9.4% growth over the previous fiscal year. The average monthly GST collection in FY25 was noted at Rs 1.84 lakh crore, up from Rs 1.68 lakh crore in FY24 and Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY22. Since its rollout, the GST system has expanded its taxpayer count from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore.
Launched on July 1, 2017, GST has streamlined India's tax framework by subsuming 17 local taxes and 13 cesses into a simplified structure. As GST completes eight years, it is lauded for strengthening India's fiscal position and enhancing transparency. In April 2025, the monthly collection peaked at Rs 2.37 lakh crore, with May 2025 figures close at Rs 2.01 lakh crore.
