Himachal Pradesh Forms High-Level Committee Amid Concerns Over Unregulated Road Construction

To address unregulated road construction in Himachal Pradesh, a high-level committee headed by PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh will monitor all cutting works. The committee, comprising key officials and NHAI representatives, aims to ensure accountability, stabilize affected areas, and coordinate monsoon relief efforts amid growing infrastructure and safety concerns.

In response to increasing concerns regarding unregulated hill cutting and dumping activities in road construction across Himachal Pradesh, the state government has instituted a high-level committee. Announced by Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh in Shimla, the committee is tasked with monitoring and overseeing ongoing highway cutting works, particularly focusing on four-lane highway projects undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Minister Singh emphasized the state's commitment to addressing residents' concerns, stating that the newly formed committee, which he will chair, includes senior officials from the PWD, Jal Shakti Department, Forest Department, and NHAI officers. The committee will conduct regular consultations and inspections to enhance accountability and develop solutions for emerging issues. An informal meeting with NHAI officials highlighted the need for stabilizing measures and third-party audits in problematic areas.

Sparking from a recent tragedy in Pandoh valley where unsafe construction led to a building collapse, the minister stressed the importance of proactive stabilization measures. Additionally, Singh reported significant monsoon damage affecting Mandi district and other regions, with ongoing relief efforts being coordinated across various agencies. The minister pledged continuous engagement with central authorities for financial support, aiming to improve response and relief measures during adverse weather conditions.
