India's Renewable Energy Milestone: A $46 Billion Saving Revolution

India's strides in renewable energy have resulted in Rs 4 lakh crore savings in fossil fuel and pollution-related costs in 2024. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted significant achievements at the Mercom Renewables Summit 2025, noting that India hit its renewable power capacity goals five years early, with solar and wind energy leading the charge.

In a significant achievement, India's push toward renewable energy has led to considerable savings valued at Rs 4 lakh crore, equivalent to over $46 billion, in fossil fuel and pollution-related expenses for the year 2024, according to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

Addressing attendees at the Mercom Renewables Summit 2025 in the nation's capital, Joshi announced that the country has realized 50% of its installed power capacity from non-fossil fuels, notably five years ahead of its initial targets. India's renewable energy capacity has now reached 245 GW, with solar and wind sources contributing prominently.

The minister emphasized the country's roadmap, with a 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target set for 2030. Initiatives, including strengthening power purchase agreements and bolstering domestic manufacturing, are in progress. Notably, the government's $24,000 crore production-linked incentive is fostering local solar and wind manufacturing, cementing India's prowess in the green energy sector.
