Mumbai Port Trust, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), and the Indian Ports Association (IPA) will jointly host a major conference, 'Waterways to Wonder: Unlocking Cruise Tourism,' in Mumbai on August 18. This event, sanctioned by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, seeks to tap into India's burgeoning potential for cruise tourism and to deliberate on strategic policies, best practices, and growth strategies.
The conference promises a blend of presentations, panel discussions, and keynote addresses from notable figures in the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, and other important stakeholders. Discussion topics will range from the strategic vision for cruise tourism development to policy and regulatory frameworks supporting growth, cultural and coastal itineraries, cruise terminal best practices, and sustainable port strategies.
Part of the agenda includes showcasing significant reforms and achievements in tourism and ferry services, facilitated by NAVIC Cell 4. This specialized unit, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, is focused on enhancing ocean, river, and lighthouse tourism. With an aim to position India as a global cruise tourism hub, NAVIC Cell 4 emphasizes the development of sustainable ocean and river cruise circuits. Key input will come from Vijay Kumar, IAS, the conference's keynote speaker and IWAI Chairman, also serving as the Nodal Officer of NAVIC Cell 4.
The IWAI's active role in advancing inland water transport in India cannot be understated, with significant progress in promoting river cruise tourism and developing efficient systems underlined by sustainable infrastructure and tech-enabled practices. The event's discussions will include industry experts like Vikas Narwal, IAS, MD, IPA; AK Bansal, Chief Engineer, IWAI; and other notable representatives from the cruise tourism sector.
The conference will wrap up with insights into India Maritime Week 2025, set for October. This global event will highlight the achievements, opportunities, and partnerships within the maritime sector, aiming to spur both domestic growth and international cooperation.
