NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) has announced a new collaboration with NTT DATA Japan. The strategic alliance aims to introduce the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) across Japan, targeting Indian tourists as the primary beneficiaries.
In a statement, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) confirmed that this partnership would enable Indian visitors to make seamless payments at NTT DATA-acquired merchant sites in Japan using QR codes and their familiar UPI apps. This marks a significant step for UPI expansion beyond India's borders.
The partnership comes at a time when Indian travel to Japan is on the rise, with over 2.08 lakh visitors between January and August—a 36% increase from the previous year. NPCI International MD & CEO Ritesh Shukla highlighted the collaboration as crucial for enhancing the digital payment experience and simplifying cross-border transactions.
