Punjab's Strategy to Combat Stubble Burning Proves Effective

Punjab witnesses a significant reduction in farm fire incidents, marking a four-fold decrease from last year. This decline is attributed to delayed harvest due to rains, stricter monitoring, awareness campaigns, and legal actions. Punjab aims to further reduce these incidents, complying with environmental regulations.

Data from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) highlights a notable decrease in farm fires from 1,510 last year to just 415 incidents this year between September 15 and October 21. This positive trend coincides with a delayed paddy harvest due to weather conditions and intensified field monitoring efforts.

The Punjab government's rigorous efforts in raising awareness about the hazards of stubble burning have paid off. Officials have acknowledged that strict surveillance and public education campaigns have contributed significantly to reducing these incidents. The sustained efforts of civil administration and police have ensured enforcement at the ground level.

As the harvesting process advances, fines and legal actions against violators have been implemented effectively, with Rs 9.4 lakh imposed as environmental compensation. In line with Supreme Court directives, the state aims to further diminish stubble-burning cases, securing compliance under the supervision of Punjab's top police officials.
