EU Greenlights 19th Sanctions Package Against Russia Amid Energy Concerns

EU member states have reached a consensus on implementing the 19th sanctions package targeting Russia, mainly focusing on a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas imports. This decision was announced by the EU's Danish rotating presidency, marking a significant step in the bloc's ongoing response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

Slovakia, the final country to agree, had initially held out due to concerns over high energy prices and necessary climate targets for its carmakers and heavy industries. After securing commitments from the European Commission to address these issues, Slovakia consented, paving the way for formal adoption of the sanctions package.

The sanctions package includes gradual implementation of the LNG import ban and extends to travel restrictions on Russian diplomats. Moreover, it lists 117 new Russian vessels and banks from Kazakhstan and Belarus that will face restrictions. Ukrainian leadership has welcomed these measures, noting that preparations for a 20th sanctions package are already underway.
