Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati, on Martyrs' Day, marking a significant tribute to the 860 individuals martyred during the Assam Movement. The memorial serves as a reminder of their sacrifices for the Assamese identity and rights.

State Minister Atul Bora accused the former Congress governments of being responsible for the bloodshed during the movement. He noted that the newly erected memorial in Guwahati's heart represents a befitting homage, acknowledging the long-standing demands of Assam's people and the All Assam Students' Union (AASU).

The Chief Minister emphasized that the memorial cost Rs 170 crore and spans more than 150 bighas, symbolizing the unwavering resolve of the Assamese to uphold their dignity. The inauguration featured lighting 860 lamps in honor of those lost, with prominent state officials and AASU members in attendance.
