Arun Khetarpal, hailing from a distinguished military family, followed a legacy of service. Born on October 14, 1950, in Pune to Brigadier M.L. Khetarpal and Maheshwari Khetarpal, he continued the family tradition of military excellence. Khetarpal was notable for his academic and athletic achievements at Lawrence School, Sanawar, before joining the National Defence Academy in 1967.
During a crucial battle on December 16, 1971, Khetarpal led his troops into action when Pakistani forces launched a counterattack at Jarpal. Displaying extraordinary valor, he took out four enemy tanks before his own tank was hit. Severely injured, Khetarpal persisted until he destroyed one final enemy tank, thwarting the enemy's advance at the cost of his life.
