In the early hours of Monday, a devastating fire ravaged a manufacturing unit in Kolkata's Anandapur area, claiming the lives of at least three people, according to officials. Firefighting teams swiftly responded to control the blaze, while rescue and relief operations were launched to address the tragic incident's aftermath.
Sinjini Sengupta, Block Development Officer (BDO), reported from the scene that three bodies have been recovered so far, with search efforts continuing. 'The fire brigade is still searching for bodies, and we are actively looking,' Sengupta stated, signaling the ongoing nature of the rescue operations.
Politically, the tragedy has prompted a strong reaction. BJP MLA Ashok Dinda accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of negligence, alleging the factory lacked proper safety measures. 'There were no fire alarms or a proper security system,' Dinda criticized, promising to support affected families and pursue justice through the courts.
Victims' families expressed anguish over safety oversights. Uttam Hazra Pachim's brother-in-law remains missing, as the family struggles to contact authorities. Gariya Mousmi Halder recounted a harrowing call from her husband before the fire. Another witness highlighted the lack of fire safety during his time at the factory.
Superintendent of Police, Baruipur, Shubhendra Kumar, confirmed an investigation is underway. Details are still emerging as rescue efforts and probes into the fire's cause progress. The community braces for more developments in this tragic incident.
