Caste Conflict Resolved, Anganwadi Centre Reopens in Odisha

After a prolonged caste-related boycott, the engagement of a Dalit woman as an anganwadi helper in Odisha has been resolved. Villagers have agreed to send their children to the centre, marking an end to the dispute that highlighted lingering caste discrimination issues in modern Indian society.

In a significant resolution, Kendrapara district administration announced that a caste-related conflict involving an anganwadi centre in Odisha's Nuagaon village has been settled. The row had emerged following the appointment of Sharmistha Sethy, a Dalit woman, as a helper at the centre, leading to a boycott by upper-caste villagers.

The dispute, which began in November, had resulted in villagers refusing to send their children to the centre. However, after discussions with stakeholders, including state commissions for child rights and women's welfare, the community agreed to resume normal operations at the centre.

The resolution comes two days after the issue was raised in Parliament, highlighting ongoing caste discrimination challenges. Authorities emphasize the importance of overcoming age-old prejudices to ensure social harmony and educational opportunities for all children.
