In a remarkable display of long-distance migration, the rare Little Stint has made its way from Siberia to the coastal stretches of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. These small migratory birds, coming in flocks, have undertaken a strenuous journey to escape harsh northern winters and find suitable seasonal habitats.

M. Mathivanan, a Senior Research Associate at Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), highlights the significance of these arrivals. "These Little Stints migrate in large numbers from Europe to India during winter, favoring seashore areas like mangroves and salt pans," he explained to ANI.

The growing numbers of Little Stints in Thoothukudi point to the area's importance as a vital haven for migratory birds. However, there is an urgent need to address habitat loss caused by pollution and land-use alterations. Efforts by the Tamil Nadu government, including the creation of a flamingo sanctuary in the Gulf of Mannar, show progress in habitat preservation.

Mathivanan advocates for systematic mapping to protect crucial bird habitats. Effective conservation, he argues, needs government intervention and public participation. By promoting awareness and involvement, the community can help safeguard these ecologically important species on their migratory route through India.
