The government of Uttar Pradesh has mandated that eggs sold in the state must carry expiry dates, akin to the labels found on packaged medicines. This new requirement is set to take effect from April 1, as confirmed by the state's official statement.

Additional Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Mukesh Meshram, explained that each egg produced in Uttar Pradesh will need to be stamped with both the production and the expiry date. This move seeks to help consumers gauge the freshness of their eggs, a point highlighted by Baleshwar Verma, a poultry farmer, who noted the decision came after a meeting chaired by the Agriculture Production Commissioner.

The stamping process will utilize machines already used by some poultry farmers, ensuring minimal cost impact. Importantly, eggs not stamped will be deemed 'not fit for consumption' and destroyed, ensuring compliance and consumer safety.
