Reviving Indigenous Cattle: Gir Breed's Journey from Brazil to India

In a groundbreaking achievement, agribusiness firm BL Agro has reported a remarkable 60% success rate in its first batch of embryo transfers. The company's subsidiary, Leads Genetics, has effectively transferred high-grade embryos from Brazil's renowned Gir cattle into 255 domestic cows.

These embryos are derived from a lineage capable of producing up to 40 litres of milk per day, significantly higher than India's average of 4.5 litres. This transfer took place at B L Kamdhenu Farms, supported by advanced IVF and genomics technology.

The programme is set to revolutionize productivity, aiming to produce certified quality embryos for wider commercial use by 2026. Collaboration talks with Indian state governments are underway to enhance indigenous cattle breeds across the country.
